The eye of the phone

It's in the little things
The world is really beautiful

if you slow down and take a look

IN my neighborhood there are many ugly things - large concrete structures, signs of vandalism, trash, and mega amounts of graffiti. But when you look around you can find many pretty things, in tiny details and in taking in the bigger picture.

- Christmas in Zagreb centar

Today is the official start of

Advent in Zagreb. adventzagreb.com

The city’s annual outdoor Christmas Market!
Advent u Zagrebu

When: 12-01-2018 thru 01-06-2019

This is our 6th Christmas living in Zagreb!
And each year we have enjoyed the center at Christmas time.
And each year it has grown bigger and better...

You can get everywhere on foot, one of the many things I love about Zagreb.
We wander down and around as often as we can,
and still don't get to see, do or eat everything!

 Revisit our past Seasons:

Last season at St. Marks Square, upper city

Zagreb ~ December 2017- January 2018

Zagreb center ~ Advent celebration.

Christmas in the tunnel.

~~~~~~~~~~
From the upper city, lower,
Ban Jelacic Square and spilling out all around,
wherever you walked
(Tomićeva, Kurelčeva, Bogoviceva & Gajeva streets, and Cvjetni, EU, Tomislav, Squares, to Zrinjevac park and more),
 night or day.
The whole area becomes so festive with beautiful trees,
Christmas decorations, and colorful lights.
There something for everyone to buy, see, listen too and enjoy!
There is plenty of free entertainment on many of the squares.
Oh and the wonderful smells; roasting chestnuts, meats, apples, hot chocolate,
and my personal favorite ~ fritule ~ (in-between a donut-hole and fried dough) yummy!
Christmas Market 2016-2017
Advent ~ Nov 28, 2015 - Jan 10, 2016
The main square by day. (Tom buying a hotdog for lunch)
Ban Josip Jelačić Square
The main square and the open air stage with free music and events;
Surrounding streets - coffee bars had seasonal décor (blankets & heaters too!:) many with their own performers;
European Square with its 1000 heart canopy and bubble stage.
(Advent na glavnom Trgu, i Advent na Europskom trgu )
 Zrinjevac Park - (Advent na Zrinjevcu). My personal favorite!
I love these huge trees, made extra special with white lights.  We shopped at the cute white wooden craft booths and enjoyed a few very good performers at the old music pavilion.
Ice park @ King Tomislav Square - (Ledeni park na Tomislavcu)
Coolest skating rink ever! And this year they added a viewing deck above the skate rental shop.
December 2014
This was the year of the "lighting of the lanterns"
A bit of trivia via www -
A traditional Christmas market is a street market associated with the celebration of Christmas during the four weeks of Advent. The history goes back to the Late Middle Ages in the German-speaking part of Europe and in many parts of the former Holy Roman Empire.
The Vienna "December market" was a kind of forerunner of the Christmas market and dates back to 1294. Munich winter market was first mentioned in 1310, Frankfurt in 1393, and the Dresden Strietzelmarkt was first held in 1434, With time, craftspeople began setting up stands at winter markets to sell baskets, toys, and woodcarvings. There were also booths ...
Around Zagreb center
We have never ventured inside the Archaeology Museum of Zagreb
~ AMZ ~ Arheološki muzej
but
The courtyard is super unique...
free the explore
We are fans of the restaurant Brewbites, which is across the street
and has its outside terrace in the AMZ courtyard,
an American style restaurant
amongst an array of ancient
amazing stone monuments.
"Stone monuments from the Greek and Roman periods, of varied purpose and content, represent one of the more important segments of the rich classical collections of the Archaeological Museum. The wide selection of Roman stone monuments, organized into several thematic units, is exhibited partly in the ground level entrance to the museum, but primarily in the garden courtyard of the museum, both under modern arcades and in the open air. Various stone monuments of large dimensions and weight, such as milestones, inscriptions, monumental statues, altars, tombstones, sarcophagi, and others, are exhibited here."
sarcophagi -a stone coffin, typically adorned with a sculpture or inscription and associated with the ancient civilizations of Egypt, Rome, and Greece.
We eat inside Brewbites, but we do frequently cut through the courtyard,
Possibly someday, soon we will make time to tour the inside of the museum...
and maybe even eat or relax over coffee on the terrace.
The courtyard is worth stopping and taking a look around!
"The archaeological collection of the State Institute had been kept in the Academy mansion at Zrinski Square from the 1880s and remained there until 1945, when the museum moved to its current location at the 19th-century Vranyczany-Hafner mansion, 19 Zrinski Square."  wikipedia
