Visiting Rijeka

We just got back from spending Easter with the Usanov's in Rijeka.
Rijeka, Croatia -  now home to the Usanov family

Rijeka is the principal seaport and the third-largest city in Croatia. It is located on Kvarner Bay, an inlet of the Adriatic Sea. The city's economy largely depends on shipbuilding and maritime transport.  Historically, because of its strategic position and its excellent deep-water Port, the city was fiercely contested, especially among Italy, Hungary, and Croatia, changing hands and demographics many times over centuries.

We had great fellowship and food!
And despite the caught-in-the-rain kind of weather,
we did some site seeing.
We can not all fit in the car, so we walked everywhere,
Which made me (us?) feel better about all the desserts I (we?) ate.

As with all of Croatia, there is much historic places to see, {plus they have the Sea}.
however, the city is on a hill and walking back to the house was always up hill !

Very cool Trsat castle < :-)

The thirteenth century Trsat castle, whose site has been in use from Roman days for being an easy place from which to control access to the sea along the Rječina River, is situated on the steep hill overlooking the Rječina gorge on its left bank, just above the town of Rijeka.

Amazing views from here

The castle was reconstructed and renovated in the 19th century when the military commander Laval Nugent, had it restored in Neo-Gothic style and built a mausoleum. It remained in the family until nearly the end of the Second World War when the general's great-grand-daughter, Countess Nugent, died at the age of 82. The courtyard of the castle has now been turned into a restaurant and many tourists visit the place during the summer months, {closed while we were there}.

Interesting Fact: The Croatian noble Vuk Krsto Frankopan is buried in one of its churches.

You can see the rain coming...
Running home,  all up hill -  really a long way up hill! Good thing dessert was waiting!
